On this day of remembrance, we honor the bravery and dedication of Canadian soldiers who displayed extraordinary courage during the Battle of Vimy. This three-day battle was a crucial moment in World War I, marking a turning point in Canada's military history.
Previous attempts to capture the strategic hill had failed in 1914 and 1915, resulting in countless human losses. However, on April 9, 1917, Canadian regiments launched a determined assault and succeeded in retaking the hill after three days of fierce fighting. Their success at Vimy was more than just a military victory; it also helped shape a new national identity for Canada.
Four Victoria Crosses, the highest distinction for extraordinary bravery and dedication in the face of the enemy, were awarded to our Canadian soldiers during this battle.
Today, we remember their indomitable determination and the ultimate sacrifice they made to defend our country and its values. Their legacy lives on in our collective memory, always reminding us of the price of freedom and peace.
