It is with great sadness that I learned of the sudden passing of Cathy Merrick, Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the entire Indigenous community of Manitoba, to the Cree Nation, to the community of Pimicikamak, as well as to her family and loved ones.
A true pioneer, Ms. Merrick shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first woman Chief of her community, and later the first Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
She leaves behind a strong and inspiring legacy, particularly through her work for reconciliation. Her commitment and leadership will remain a source of inspiration for all of us.
