I was very moved to participate in the grand opening of the Mitshuap Shelter, an organization with the mission of providing nightly shelter and meals to homeless individuals in the West Island of Montreal.
Mitshuap means 'house' in Innu-aimun… the meals are homemade, and according to the staff and administration, "we want those who visit the shelter to feel at home."
I must admit that it was a powerful moment filled with hope and emotion when we were wrapped in blankets, symbolizing the fact that these individuals will no longer be cold.
It is often said that reconciliation is a two-way street, and the Mitshuap Shelter is a shining example of just that, as it opens its doors to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
