Nomination period closed

The nomination period is now closed, no extensions will be granted.

Thank you for your interest in our Honours Program.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for nomination by an individual or an organization, the nominee must, before the nomination deadline:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (S.C. 2001, c. 27) and reside permanently in Québec;
  • be aged 65 or over;
  • have contributed to the well-being of their community or to the achievement of an organization’s mission through sustained volunteer involvement in social or community activities that began or continued after the age of 64.

The person or organization submitting the nomination must duly complete the electronic nomination form.

Only nominations for living people can be accepted. However, the nomination remains eligible if the death occurs after the nomination has been submitted.

Factors that may lead to the rejection of a nomination

  • The nominee has already been awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Seniors Medal since 2008.
  • The nomination form was completed by the nominee in question.
  • The presentation text is too short or incomplete, or written in the form of a curriculum vitae.
  • The presentation text was written by the nominee to justify receiving the medal; the text must be written in the third-person singular.

The Lieutenant Governor reserves the right to refuse any nomination that does not meet the eligibility criteria, or for any other motive.

Deadline

The nomination period begins on November 1st of each year and lasts three months. All Québec residents and organizations can submit one or more nominations by February 1st of each year, by completing the electronic nomination form for each nominee. Only electronic forms are accepted.

The form is no longer accessible after the deadline, to allow sufficient time for nominations to be processed. No extension will be granted for the submission of nomination forms, for any reason.

A few instructions before completing the form

When completing the form, you must:

  • maintain discreetness surrounding each nomination to avoid disappointment, uneasiness or discomfort for the person or organization submitting the application if it is unsuccessful – at the end of the selection process, the Lieutenant Governor’s Chief of Staff and Private Secretary will inform the nominees by letter and formal invitation. The awarding of the medal is not automatic;
  • use accents, hyphens and upper- and lower-case letters;
  • fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory. Failure to complete a mandatory field will prevent you from proceeding to the next step;
  • please do not use all capital letters – this is not permitted and will result in the rejection of the form;
  • be sure to correctly spell the nominee’s first and last names at birth, as this information will be used as provided for the designation of the recipient.

Other instructions

In a well-written text of no more than 750 words, describe how the nominee meets the eligibility criteria listed above and how they stand out. Here are a few suggestions:

  • avoid writing a text that is merely a curriculum vitae-style itemization or a simple list of associations or actions. Do not reproduce, word for word, a text written by the nominee, since your text must be written in the third person. If you fail to meet this requirement, your nomination may be rejected;
  • avoid using acronyms or abbreviations when naming committees, organizations or clubs. Please provide the full name of each organization and, if necessary, a brief explanation of its nature;
  • choose clear, meaningful words to describe the nominee’s praiseworthy actions, as the nomination will be evaluated based on your text;
  • write your text in the language (French or English) in which you would like the recipient to be presented during the ceremony.

In accordance with our writing guidelines, you must also provide a summary, in no more than 60 words, of the nominee’s main achievements and their influence in the community or organization. This text will be used to introduce the recipient at the award ceremony.

You must ensure that the nominee meets the program’s eligibility criteria, particularly the criteria of being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (SC 2001, c 27) and residing permanently in Québec.

Award Ceremonies

The medal will be presented to the recipients at a ceremony presided over by the Lieutenant Governor.

On receipt of an official letter of invitation from the Lieutenant Governor’s Chief of Staff and Private Secretary, each recipient must attend in person to the ceremony to which they have been invited in order to receive the medal. Only deceased recipients can be represented by someone else.

There are no financial rewards associated with the Lieutenant Governor's Honours Program.
